Helpful Hints
  • Check expiration dates every few months, and discard whatever has expired by flushing it down the toilet.
  • If you have trouble opening lids, talk to your pharmacist. He or she may be able to give you a more user-friendly lid (provided there are no children in the house).

What Should Be In Your Medicine Cabinet?

Are you prepared for medical emergencies or illnesses in your home? If you're like most of us, your medicine cabinet could use a little help so that it can help you. Suzanne's guest is her own family pharmacist, Mr. Bob Hennessy, R.P.h, owner of Hennessey's Pharmacy, which still has a soda fountain!

Mr. Hennessy says that first, you should eliminate any prescription or over the counter medications that have expired. Next, make sure you have preparations to deal with any number of situations. He's come up with a comprehensive list:

Analgesics:

  • Aspirin, regular strength and 81 mg for preventing heart attacks in those who are 55+
  • Ibuprofin/Tylenol, etc.

First Aid Supplies:

  • Band Aids and gauze pads, various sizes
  • Adhesive tape
  • Ace bandage

Ointments and Creams:

  • Hydrocortisone cream for rashes
  • Triple antibiotic for cuts, abrasions
  • Burn cream
  • Sting kill for insect bites
  • Ichthamol drawing salve for splinters, boils
  • Hydrogen peroxide (good for cleaning cuts and abrasions, and for cleaning ears)
  • Sunscreen

Medications:

  • Benedryl for allergic reactions
  • Epinephrine (if someone in house is allergic to bees)
  • Saline nasal spray to relieve stuffiness
  • Decongestant
  • Antacid
  • Anti-Diarrheal

Miscellaneous:

  • Thermometer
  • Eye wash and eye cup
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Heating pad
  • Ice pack for sprains or muscle aches
